Copal symbolizes the transformation from the physical, the tree, to the divine. Copal is native to the Latin America and East Africa. As a sacred resin, it originates from the Indigenous people of Anahuac, present day Mexico. The name “copal” is the romanized Nahuatl (Aztec, “copalli”) name for the beautiful, holy resin procured from any species of the Bursera tree. The blood of the tree and the food of the gods.
Copal is powerful. It brings harmony, connection and eases the mind. This incense is made in small quantities with reverence for its significant Native root. It is still the scent of ceremony throughout Mesoamerica and the scent of El Dias de Los Muertos. Copal tells a story of intergenerational wisdom, resilience, and survival of the Indigenous spirit despite attempts and erasure of sacred tradition from colonization.
